It's .... still .... running ....
Adding the OCEAN file to CMAQ has made it even slower. We've been running for several hours now with no end in sight. Another thing, I'm seeing these messages in the output log:

We'll just have to see how things turn out...

This site has info about the aero4 module and OCEAN file: http://www.cmascenter.org/help/model_docs/cmaq/4.5/AEROSOL_NOTES.txt
It sounds like the SURF variables are not needed. The aerosol module is not currently equipped to handle them now; the variable was probably built in to accommodate future updates.
